A hell of a lot, basically.
If you suddenly became 19 billion dollars richer, how would you spend it? Last week, citizens of the tech world awoke to shocking news that every one’s favourite time waster, Facebook, purchased WhatsApp. It wasn’t so much that the social media giant has acquired the popular mobile messaging service, it was the number written on the sticker up top that took folks by surprise, after all, 19 Billion dollars (that’s Billion, with a big, fat, B) is far from being pocket change, even for Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
The first thing that came to every ones mind was, ‘Gee, why can’t I invent something like that?’ Trust me, even my grandfather questioned my direction in life considering I didn’t have a WhatsApp of my own to sell. Once you realized that most of us have no idea how to design an app, must less a successful one, as ideas are only worth yesterdays news without practical application, you probably asked yourself: ‘If I had 19 billion dollars, what could I buy with it?’
Well, you weren’t alone, in fact, there is a whole tumblr page dedicated to ‘Things that are cheaper than WhatsApp.’ Perhaps WhatsApp Founders, Jan Koum and Brian Acton (who was denied a job at Facebook in 2009) are glancing at the site as we speak, trying to find inspiration on what the hell to do with their new found wealth. In case they stumble upon this one first, I’ve paired the best of them down (as well as adding three of my own) for their reading enjoyment. Who knows, maybe if I point them in the right direction, I might get a small $50 million tip.
