None of these chick flicks feature slut-shaming or rampant misogyny. How refreshing.
Chick flicks? What a load of rubbish.
You could be forgiven for thinking this – it’s what the world of highbrow critics and pretentious film students want you to believe and, to some extent, it’s true. Some old chick flicks have a lot to answer for: the idea that women think they want a career, but they’re really just waiting for a man to disprove that; the thought process that says if women claim they’re not interested, they really just want a man to harass them via ‘romance’; that we’re all just waiting for a make-over; ongoing rumours that misogynistic, slut-shaming men are somehow attractive.
No one needs that. Thankfully, belatedly, Hollywood seems to be starting to move on from this, and dismissing any film just because there are female leads or because it looks like a rom-com now seems stupid (and pretty damn sexist). There are some ‘chick flicks’ out there that are relatable and give you something great to take away from them, and here are my top five.
