Belfort was just the tip of the iceberg. These guys are in for a hell of a comedown.
“Shame on you – disgusting!” yells some unknown screenwriter at Martin Scorsese, minutes after the AMPAS screening of The Wolf of Wall Street. He is referring to the debauched lifestyles of the movie’s protagonists: sex, drugs, money, drugs, success and of course drugs. Hard to say where that screenwriter has been living that he is still shocked by seeing these things on screen – complex and interesting hedonistic characters litter film history, their journeys to the extremes of human* behaviour providing shocks, hilarity, tragedy and insight into the human* condition. Here are some of film’s most depraved, unscrupulous and impulse-satisfying hedonists.
10. Patrick Bateman – American Psycho (2000)
American Psycho is a film about a very, very sick man unscrupulously indulging his depraved desire to listen to Phil Collins records. Oh, and he kills some hookers with a chainsaw in there at some point. In this pretty restrained adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis book of the same name, Christian Bale plays Patrick Bateman as an obsessive psychopath who just loves to fuck and murder people to get his kicks. In the book he doesn’t stop there – he goes a bit Jeffrey Dahmer, keeping bits of people for later consumption and/or…erm…”use”. Admittedly this film isn’t as upbeat as Rules of Attraction, but Ellis really knows how to warm the old cockles. He should write for Pixar.
