20 clips, 20 movies: A look at the incredible career of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Often, when looking to make up lists of this kind, it takes some effort (and perhaps even a little bit of padding) to find the moments to fill the space. With Philip Seymour Hoffman, it took no time at all. His career was so varied, so full of memorable figures of such wildly contrasting character, that the only difficult part was deciding what to leave out. Limited to one clip per film, the ‘great moments’ on this list are also a showcase for what remarkable range and versatility Hoffman had.
Also remarkable is what had to be left out – there’ll be no mention here of Hoffman’s work in The Savages, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Cold Mountain, or 25th Hour, which is testament to how widely the actor spread his talent: in a film career lasting 20 years, Hoffman gave more than 20 legitimately great performances. We’ve already said our goodbyes to Hoffman; this list is instead a celebration of the man’s skill, a skill that was, to employ that overused term correctly, breathtaking.
