Scorsese and DiCaprio make each other better. Here are some other cinematic duos who upped each other’s game.

This week Martin Scorsese’s epic comedy The Wolf of Wall Street hits cinemas and finds the director collaborating with Leonardo DiCaprio for the fifth time, a run that has seen the actor’s talents honed to a fine point and the director re-embrace the anarchic cinematic pleasures of his youth. They appear to be making each other stronger filmmakers; at least they’re in better form when they’re together (most certainly in DiCaprio’s case).

Cinema is no stranger to the lengthy collaborations between a director and their muse – actually it is absolutely lousy with them – so here are five memorable director/actor team ups that resulted in (arguably) the greatest films of their respective careers.
