4. Bronson (2008)

bronson tom hardy is 20 stone of meat

It’s hard to imagine Tom Hardy as a slim youngster, but his determination to play notorious prisoner Michael Gordon Peterson, aka Charles Bronson, brought him recognition (Hardy pushed himself to do 2,500 press-ups a day to match the real-life figure’s physique). Told with a subversive, blackly comedic tone, Nicolas Winding Refn’s film chronicles the life of the notorious jailbird, as he revels in his fight stories whilst conversely highlighting his darker moments, all a result of his incarceration through most of his adult life. It’s an interesting portrait of Britain’s most violent prisoner from acclaimed filmmaker Refn.
