3. The Criminal (1960)
A much overlooked prison drama, The Criminal was released at the peak of Britain’s Angry Young Man Cinema. Although tame by today’s standards, the harsh depictions of prison life hadn’t been shown in such graphic, gloomy detail before and The Criminal was a perfect entry into the AYM cinematic movement. It’s a classic rise and fall tale, of the violent, directionless robber Johnny Bannion, and with a twist ending that is both shocking and fitting, it’s a surprisingly gritty early British prison drama.
