3. The Criminal (1960)
A much overlooked prison drama, The Criminal was released at the peak of Britainís Angry Young Man Cinema. Although tame by todayís standards, the harsh depictions of prison life hadnít been shown in such graphic, gloomy detail before and The Criminal was a perfect entry into the AYM cinematic movement. It’s a classic rise and fall tale, of the†violent,†directionless robber Johnny Bannion, and with a twist ending that is both shocking and fitting, itís a surprisingly gritty early British prison drama.
