One of the most anticipated games in the video game industry has to be Red Dead Redemption 2. The sequel to what is widely considered to be a hit video game classic, the game returns players to the old west. It surprisingly takes them on a journey into a time before John Marston’s mission with the US Government and his final ride in the original game. Up until now, all of the details we’ve learned about the game included the prequel setting of the game and the fact we’d delve more into Dutch’s gang. Yet now Rockstar San Diego Art Director Josh Bass and Rockstar North Director of Art Aaron Garbut opened up about the game and the plot details we’ll be seeing in the game.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Plot Details Emerge
In the original game, players were shown the relationship between John Marston and his old gang leader and friend, Dutch. John was forced to hunt down his former gang members in the declining Old West. Having to take down the people he once considered family in order to protect his wife and son from a corrupt US government agent, John found himself torn between loyalty and family throughout the events of the first game. By the game’s end, he had successfully taken down the gang. Yet he was betrayed by the government, taken down while his wife and son escaped. Now in Red Dead Redemption 2, rather than explore a post-John Marston age, fans are being taken to the time before the events of the first game. Here John still ran with Dutch but was beginning to plan his exit from the gang life.
As Josh Bass describes it, the game will focus on Dutch’s most loyal enforcer, Arthur Morgan. Adopted by Dutch and his gang as a child, Arthur considers the gang to be his family and one constant in his life. This takes place shortly before the end of the Old West, when the technology that pushes gangs like Dutch’s out of their seat of power begins to emerge and the government gets more involved. At that time, we’ll also see John and his position in the gang, and possibly the events that led him to leave.
Times Are Changing
Fans can also expect to see the way the nation around them changes, and how it begins to affect the gang. Arthur will watch as the gang begins to feel a toll being taken on them as they are hunted across the country. Meanwhile, Arthur will see Dutch’s hold on the gang begin to slip out of his grasp. This will see the downfall that leads to the events of the first game. Unlike Rockstar’s other recent hit GTA V, Read Dead Redemption 2 will only have one protagonist to play as, with the rest of the gang fighting alongside Arthur and forming real relationships in game.
