A few years ago, the survival horror genre of gaming had a pretty impressive and disturbing game demo released known as P.T. The game was meant to be a preview of the amazing collaboration between Hideo Kojima, Guillermo Del Toro and Norman Reedus for their interpretation of the Silent Hill franchise. However due to legal issues and contractual problems, the game was shelved and remains unused, a haunting reminder of what could have been. While gamers know Reedus and Kojima are working together on the game Death Stranding, survival horror fans have eagerly awaited a new game to dive into. Well look no further than Ubisoft’s Transference.

Transference is the psychological/survival horror game from legendary game creators Ubisoft and the film company SpectreVision, headed by actor Elijah Wood. At Gamescom 2018, he and the studios showcased their upcoming game, and boy did they present one spectacular game. You are an unnamed protagonist who finds themselves trapped inside a corrupted mind, caught in an experiment to transfer oneself into another person’s consciousness gone horribly wrong.

We learned from the demo and game that the protagonist will be able to shift perspectives between three different members of a small family involved in the experiment. The mystery behind the family and what befell them during this experiment is the key to finding your way out of this corrupted mind. From the terrified little boy and son of the scientist running the experiment, to the supporting wife and mother who is caught between her husband’s ambitions and her family’s stability, and finally the husband and father determined to keep his family together using a powerful and unproven new technology, this game is prime for deep psychological horror.

The horror aspect of this game comes in the form of an unknown entity. This dark mass known as the monster of this corrupted mind comes when you begin to learn more about the family and their past. As you unlock clues and shift perspectives, this monster hunts you down, seeking to destroy you and prevent you from finding the clues that will lead not only to your freedom, but to the truth behind this family and their ultimate fate. What or who is this monster? Who’s mind are you trapped in? Who are you exactly? That’s what you have to find out in Transference.

For years not the psychological/survival horror genre has been pushing the boundaries. From the Outlast franchise to Five Nights at Freddy’s, this genre has expanded the gaming industry. Transference is the unique exploration of a film and video game company merging together to bring high quality storytelling with unique gameplay. Coming to consoles PS4, Xbox and the VR systems PSVR, Vive and Oculus on September 18th, this is a must play game that you have to see to believe. Get ready to sleep with the lights on, and discover what the price for the truth really is in Ubisoft’s Transference.

What do you guys think? Do you think this is the next evolution of the genre, or are you ready for survival horror games to end? Leave your thoughts down below in the comments.
